It’s important to find the right hair brush to suit your specific hair type to avoid damage and get the best results.

When it comes to brushing and styling your hair, what type of hair brush do you use? Did you select one based on the type of bristles or shape, or did you look at price alone?

Did you know that it is important to find a hair brush that has been manufactured to suit your individual hair type?  Not only that, but there are different hair brushes for various hair styling purposes.

In this article we look at different hair types, the vast selection of bristles and brush sizes and shapes, and compare brushes to combs. You are sure to get a good idea on which brush works best for your hair.

Are Boar Bristle Brushes Good For Your Hair?

The bristles of hair brushes can vary from cheap plastic to natural boar bristles. The reason why natural boar bristles are

It’s important to note that boar bristle hair brushes are not suitable for detangling hair or getting out knots. It’s best to use a comb or detangling brush for that. Instead, boar bristle brushes are wonderful for conditioning and smoothing the hair as well as adding shine.

This is due to the unique structure of the boar bristle. Each bristle carries sebum, which is the oil produced by your scalp,  from your scalp to the end of your hair shaft. The tiny amount of sebum that coats each strand helps to repair dry hair and add shine. Best of all, you’ll probably notice far less frizz than ever before.

What Different Hair Brushes Do

A paddle brush is a flat, square brush with still synthetic bristles. They are great for detangling really thick, wet hair. Start at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the roots.

If you want big curls but don’t want to use a hot iron, use a ceramic round brush with synthetic bristles while blow drying. The ceramic barrel will heat up to style the hair and the bristles will smooth and detangle.

A small barrel brush with boar bristles is the go-to tool for most professional hair stylists. These won’t snag the hair and you get far greater control (but you will need some experience)!

A vented brush will allow air from the blow dryer to pass directly through onto the hair to style it. These brushes are great if you just want to quickly blow dry your hair straight.

Is It Better To Use A Comb Or Brush?

Use a comb when:

  • your hair is wet. This is absolutely the number one rule. If you brush wet hair you are risking snapping and breaking the strands.
  • you need to distribute styling products through your hair. These include conditioner and hair treatments.
  • you want to smooth dry hair.
  • you need to detangle and remove knots. Go for a wide-tooth comb and start at the ends of your hair. Work you way up to the roots and use smooth, light strokes.
  • you want to create a part in your hair
  • you want to tease your hair.

Use a brush when:

  • creating hairstyles. Use it to pull your hair into a ponytail, an updo, a half-up-half-down hairstyle.
  • smoothing hair. Gently brush stray strands back into place.
  • using a blow-dryer. A paddle or round brush will make it easy to smooth down the hair under the hot air.
  • you are styling bangs.
  • you want to  distribute natural oils through your hair.

Whichever you use, make sure to be gentle and don’t pull hard on your hair.
