A hairdresser in Waterloo, Iowa came to the rescue of a 16-year-old girl recently, saving her from having her hair completely shaved off.
Kayley Olsson, a cosmetology student, was studying at Capri College when the 16-year-old came in with impossibly tangled hair. Olsson spent eight hours trying to comb it into submission, then asked the teenager to come back the following day.
The next day, the teenager – whose identity has not been released – returned and suggested that Olsson “just shave it.”
The 16-year-old had been struggling with mental health issues, including severe depression, for months. Her depression had been so debilitating that some days she had been unable to get out of bed except to use the bathroom.
Telling Olsson that she felt “worthless,” the 16-year-old expected that no one would understand how she could have let her hair become so tangled. But the 20-year-old cosmetology student did understand, admitting to suffering from depression herself.
On A Mission To Save The Tangled Hair
Olsson told the teenager that she couldn’t make any promises about saving her hair, but that she would do everything she could to keep it without having to resort to shaving.
“We’re going to try as much as we can without having to use the clippers. I can’t promise anything, but I’m going to try my hardest to keep the length of hair that you want.”
The resulting look was nothing short of exceptional. After the cosmetology student had managed to brush out all the tangles, she washed and blow-dried the teen’s hair, then curled it.
For Olsson, the biggest reward for all her effort came when the teenager smiled as she looked at herself in the mirror – something she had not done for quite some time.
